(photo : DefenseMediaNetwork) Based on information made public by the US Department of Defense through its website as of September 29, 2016, the US Navy"s Naval Surface Warfare Center awarded a US$25.4 million contract to BAE Systems Land & Armaments LP for the production of Mk. 38 Mod. 3 Machine Gun System (MGS), which will be installed on US Navy ships as well as Foreign Military Sales (FMS) to friendly countries. Among those scheduled to receive from FMS is the Philippine Navy, whose share on the contract is around 8%, or roughly US$2.03 million. Future Australian Defence Vessel (ADV) Cape Inscription is the the second of two follow-on Cape-class boats that will be operated by the Royal Australian Navy. The first boat, ‘Cape Fourcroy’, was rolled out in December last year and is scheduled for delivery to the navy in April 2017. The first eight vessels were ordered in 2011 and entered service with the Australian Border Force from 2013 onwards. In December 2015, Austal announced a AU$63 million contract for the construction of another two boats. The introduction training was conducted at a hotel in Central Jakarta, and the last week was at sea in Semangka Bay for practical training down to depths of 1000 metres. The training objectives for the crew before embarking for the sea trials ranged from system understanding to inertial navigation and advanced mission planning. “Language barriers made the training challenging,” says chief AUV instructor Stian Hopmark, “luckily, this was compensated for by the students having an extraordinary interest in the subjects and willingness to learn.” OCEA, the French shipbuilder that built and delivered the two survey ships has stated that they are very pleased with Kongsberg...

(photo: Schiebel Group) The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has awarded Austria’s Schiebel Group a contract to provide its Camcopter S-100 unmanned helicopter and three years of logistics support. The company announced the contract on February 6, but it was signed back in December. It did not disclose the contract value or the number of systems ordered, each of which consists of two aircraft. With an empty weight of 110 kg (243 pounds) and powered by heavy-fuel or gasoline engines, the S-100 carries a payload of 75 pounds for more than six hours; fitted with an optional external fuel tank it operates for more than 10 hours.
