AFP Modernization 2nd Stage Sees More Attack Helis, Missiles 13 Maret 2017 Second Horizon of modernization slated between 2018 and 2022 (image : PN) The Department of National Defense (DND) is looking at the possibility of including more night-capable attack helicopters, precision guided missiles, drones and fast boats in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program’s Second Horizon. DND Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said that they are studying the possibility of including these platforms and weapons in the existing list of equipment which will be acquired in the Second Horizon. “We are still studying this as [Second Horizon] has already existing list,” he added. According to Defense Update, the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems will make each Remote Weapon System (RWS) operate 12.7 heavy machine guns also and mount Spike-ER launchers. This will extend the boat’s firepower to more than 8 kilometers. These acquisitions are significant because, for the Spike ER, it will be the very first missile system ever to officially enter service with our PN ships. MaxDefense, the military analyst, has posted on Facebook saying he believes the PAF’s target will be “AgustaWestland AW-109P armed helicopters and Bell 412EP combat utility helicopters.” Based on information gathered from MaxDefense sources, the Philippine Air Force is expected to proceed the process of procuring 30 helicopters this year, which MaxDefense believes to be AgustaWestland AW-109P armed helicopters and Bell 412EP combat utility helicopters.
